Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy
PRP therapy is a method of natural healing used to treat a host of orthopedic conditions and athletic injuries. The goal of this “regenerative medicine” is to increase function and decrease pain by expediting the healing of wounds and soft tissue injuries through injections of the patient’s own platelet-rich plasma.
What to expect:
First, Dr. Douglas, who is trained in PRP Therapy, will draw a small amount of blood and centrifuge it to spin off platelet-rich plasma. The injured area is then numbed using local anesthesia and the plasma is injected into the patient’s damaged tissue. Ultrasound may be used to help guide the injection. The plasma contains large reservoirs of bioactive proteins, including growth factors that are essential to initiate and accelerate tissue repair and regeneration. This high concentration of platelets signals the body to send healing cells to the injury, which jump-starts the healing process.
